A legend of the mat begins a new chapter at the helm of the Hellenic Taekwondo Federation

ATHENS— Greek taekwondo is entering a new era under the leadership of one of the most important figures in its history. Michalis Mouroutsos, Olympic champion at Sydney 2000, was elected president of the Hellenic Taekwondo Federation — ELOT — during the early elections held on Saturday, 11 July 2026.

Mouroutsos received the majority backing of the clubs and will now be expected to lead a process aimed at restoring institutional confidence, strengthening transparency, reunifying the national taekwondo movement and continuing the development of a discipline with a deep competitive tradition in Greece.

From Olympic champion to sports administrator

Mouroutsos’s arrival at the presidency carries enormous symbolic weight. The new leader does not know taekwondo only from the administrative offices, but also from the highest demands of elite competition.

At the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, at just 20 years of age, he won the gold medal in the men’s -58kg category. His triumph came in the first edition in which taekwondo was officially included in the Olympic programme, making him one of the sport’s inaugural Olympic champions.

Mouroutsos remains the only Greek athlete to have won an Olympic gold medal in taekwondo. He was also the only European Olympic champion in the sport for 12 years, from Sydney 2000 until London 2012.

His career also includes two European titles, one silver medal and one bronze medal at continental championships, as well as medals in military, university and Balkan competitions. In 2024, he was recognised by World Taekwondo as the outstanding athlete in his category at the Sydney Games.

He later complemented his sporting experience with an increasingly prominent administrative career. Before being elected president of ELOT, he served as the organisation’s secretary general, as a federation representative and as second vice-president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee.

He also previously held positions within athletes’ bodies and administrative structures linked to World Taekwondo and the European Taekwondo Union.

Elections

The electoral process had not originally been scheduled as part of the federation’s regular timetable. The early elections were called following a vote held by the federation’s Board of Directors on 12 June.

The proposal to convene an extraordinary General Assembly and return the decision to the clubs was approved by 14 votes to eight. Mouroutsos was among those who supported that course of action, arguing that renewing the mandate granted by the clubs represented the strongest institutional route towards restoring confidence and unity.

The campaign also produced a contest with strong Olympic symbolism. Mouroutsos faced Elisavet “Elli” Mystakidou, silver medallist at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and first vice-president of the outgoing administration.

In his candidacy statement, Mouroutsos argued that Greek taekwondo could not continue under closed structures, opaque practices or administrative models that he regarded as outdated. He also insisted that he was not merely seeking a position, but competing for the future that the sport should offer to the next generations.

The challenges facing the new president

Mouroutsos’s sporting prestige represents significant institutional capital, but his administration will ultimately be judged on its ability to convert that support into tangible results.

One of his first challenges will be to bring together the different sectors that took part in the elections. The scale of participation demonstrates that the clubs want to play a direct role in the federation’s leadership, while also confirming the existence of an attentive and demanding community.

Administrative and sporting transparency will be another central issue. The new leadership will be expected to guarantee clear procedures in athlete selection, the formation of national teams, technical appointments, refereeing, the organisation of championships and the allocation of resources.

From a competitive perspective, Greece possesses one of the most significant Olympic histories in European taekwondo. In addition to Mouroutsos’s gold medal, the country has produced figures such as Alexandros Nikolaidis and Elli Mystakidou. Nevertheless, one of the main objectives will be to restore a consistent presence on world and Olympic podiums, develop a sustainable high-performance structure and build an effective pathway from the younger age categories to the senior national team.

The new administration must also capitalise on Greece’s proven organisational capacity at international championships and strengthen its relations with World Taekwondo, the European Taekwondo Union and the Hellenic Olympic Committee.

A new Board of Directors

The elections also determined the composition of the new Board of Directors. Its members include Olympian and world champion Areti Athanasopoulou, alongside representatives from different areas and regions of Greek taekwondo.

The body is expected to meet within eight days of the elections in order to be formally constituted, allocate the remaining administrative posts and officially begin the new term.

The significance of his election

The election of Michalis Mouroutsos represents far more than a change of president. It marks the transition of an athlete who played a leading role in one of the foundational moments of Olympic taekwondo into the highest administrative position in his country.

Twenty-six years ago, he stood on top of the podium in Sydney. He must now bring into administration the values that defined his career: preparation, discipline, leadership and the ability to perform under pressure.

Award Best Player Sydney 2000

His gold medal secured him a permanent place in history. His presidency will determine whether he can also leave a lasting mark on the future of Greek taekwondo.
