ASTANA, Kazakhstan. The Altaic Taekwondo Union officially opened a new chapter for regional taekwondo with the successful staging of its first General Assembly on June 21, followed by the opening of the inaugural Altaic Taekwondo Championships on June 22 in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Led by Kudrat Shamiyev, President of the Altaic Taekwondo Union and President of the Kazakhstan Taekwondo Federation, the General Assembly brought together representatives from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Korea, Russia, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
World Taekwondo President Dr. Chungwon Choue attended the meeting and welcomed the Union’s efforts to strengthen friendship, cooperation, and the development of taekwondo across the Altaic region. Also in attendance were World Taekwondo Vice President Jinbang Yang, World Taekwondo Council Member Metin Sahin, and World Taekwondo Auditor Ali Sagirkaya.
During the Assembly, delegates unanimously approved the Constitution and Development Strategy of the Altaic Taekwondo Union, setting the foundation for future cooperation in competitions, education, youth engagement, coach and referee development, and international exchange programs
The Assembly also confirmed key appointments within the organization, including Türkiye’s Bahri Tanrıkulu as Vice President and Kazakhstan’s Nadezhda Khamitova as Secretary General.
The agenda continued on June 22 with the opening ceremony of the inaugural Altaic Taekwondo Championships, a World Taekwondo G-1 ranked event featuring junior and senior athletes from across the region.
Dr. Chungwon Choue congratulated President Kudrat Shamiyev and the member federations on the successful launch of the Union and its first Championships, describing the initiative as an important step toward strengthening regional cooperation and promoting the values of taekwondo.
The Altaic Taekwondo Championships will run through June 23. The next meeting of the Altaic Taekwondo Union is scheduled to take place during the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Final in Astana in November 2026.
