TAIYUAN, China — The Taiyuan 2026 World Taekwondo Women’s Open Championships concluded on Sunday, 30 August, after three days of competition featuring a record field, leading international athletes and eight champions across the women’s Olympic weight divisions.
Held from 28–30 August at the Shanxi Sports Centre, the event brought together 391 athletes from 60 countries, as well as the World Taekwondo Refugee Team, making it the largest edition of the Women’s Open to date.
The opening day saw Morocco’s Farah Touzani win the -46kg title, China’s Zinuo Shen take gold at -62kg, and Great Britain’s Lauren Williams return to the top of the podium in the +73kg category. Spain also celebrated an important bronze medal through 17-year-old Violeta Díaz Arribas in -46kg.
On the second day, China strengthened its position with victories from Xiaolu Fu in -49kg and Xiaolu Wang in -53kg, while Belgium’s Sarah Chaâri claimed the -73kg title.
The final day produced gold medals for Jordan’s Fadia Khirfan in -57kg and Iran’s Sagar Moradi Sheiklar in -67kg.
China finished as the most successful nation in terms of individual titles, winning three gold medals.
The Opening Ceremony was attended by World Taekwondo President Dr Chungwon Choue, Vice-President Jinbang Yang, Secretary General Jeongkang Seo, Council Member Slavi Binev and World Taekwondo Culture and Heritage Committee Chair Justin Hou.
Chinese officials in attendance included Chinese Taekwondo Association President Zhang Zhi, CTA Vice-President Chen Zhong, former IOC Athletes’ Commission member Zhang Hong and Zhao Yanfeng, Director of the Sport Bureau of Shanxi Province.
Technology also played a significant role in Taiyuan.
The championship used the Waychamp electronic Protector and Scoring System, with the Chinese company included among World Taekwondo’s recognised technology providers. The competition also featured sensor-equipped gloves as part of the evolving technical environment linked to World Taekwondo’s new competition rules.
Taiyuan is already familiar with elite international taekwondo, having hosted a World Taekwondo Grand Prix in 2023. The city became the third host of the World Taekwondo Women’s Open Championships following Riyadh in 2022 and Malabo in 2025.
The growth of the event has been significant. Malabo 2025 featured 188 athletes, while Taiyuan 2026 welcomed 391 competitors, confirming the rapid expansion of the championship.
Beyond the numbers, Taiyuan also delivered an important sporting message. Established stars such as Sarah Chaâri and Lauren Williams once again demonstrated their quality, while athletes including Farah Touzani and Fadia Khirfan emerged as major winners on the world stage.
Three days of competition, eight champions and a record international field brought the largest World Taekwondo Women’s Open Championships in history to a successful close in China.
The Taiyuan 2026 World Taekwondo Women’s Open Championships drew to a close, having brought together nearly 60 countries for the third edition of the event.
Host nation China finished top of the medal table with three of the eight gold medals, while Morocco, Great Britain, Belgium, Jordan and Iran each won one.
